The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service selected Huron Pines to over see the Saunders Dam removal, in the Pigeon River State Forest. Huron Pines contracted J&N Construction to remove the entire concrete structure from the Black River.
The dam was degraded so we had to place crane mats to cross.
Steel sheets were placed in the river to control the flow of water going through the dam.
Once the water reached the appropriate level, the dam was completely removed.
The steel sheets were then removed and the project area was restored, following erosion and sediment control measures.
As seen in these photos taken one year after project completion, the area recovered quickly.
